FROM THE MEMORY OF THE PLACE,
THE STORY OF THIS PROJECT WAS BORN.

THE STORY

Where the Douro transforms into an experience.

There are places that one visits.

And there are places that stay with us long after we’ve left.

Casa do Ferrão was born precisely from this conviction: that true luxury lies in comfort, but also in the privilege of experiencing a territory, understanding its history, and feeling the serene rhythm of nature.

Located on a privileged hillside in the Alto Douro Wine Region — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Casa do Ferrão is the result of a family’s vision. After decades dedicated to the real estate sector, they decided to transform a place of memory into a space of welcome, contemplation, and authenticity.

The project rises upon the “ruins” of an old agricultural outbuilding on the property, preserving the identity of the place while reinventing itself through contemporary architecture deeply rooted in the landscape. It is not just about rebuilding a house; it is about giving life back to a territory.

Designed by internationally acclaimed architect Belém Lima, nominated for the prestigious Mies van der Rohe European Prize for Contemporary Architecture, Casa do Ferrão establishes a subtle dialogue between tradition and modernity. Its refined geometry, earthy-toned brick, sloping roof, and wide openings overlooking the valley make the architecture a natural extension of the mountain.

Here, the house does not dominate the landscape.

It belongs to him.

Each space was designed to frame the Douro Valley as a work of art in constant transformation. The light, the silence, the river, the vineyards, and the terraces become an integral part of the daily experience.

With capacity to accommodate up to fourteen guests, distributed across five carefully designed bedrooms, Casa do Ferrão prioritizes both intimacy and togetherness. Bright rooms, indoor and outdoor living areas, terraces, reading nooks, and spaces for contemplation invite you to slow down, allowing you to rediscover time.

The property extends over approximately five thousand square meters, where centuries-old olive trees, vineyards, olive groves, fruit trees, and other crops create a vibrant agricultural landscape. The old stone walls have been restored, the terraces rebuilt, and paths have been created that lead serenely to the river. Along the way, small quiet spots emerge, designed for reading, contemplation, or simply listening to the wind and the animals rustling through the leaves.

More than just providing accommodation, Casa do Ferrão aims to offer a different way to experience the Douro region.

Guests will be able to follow the cycle of the vineyard and olive grove, observe or participate in agricultural tasks, discover the flavors of Douro cuisine, visit historic farms, connect with local producers and artisans, sail on the river, hike trails, or explore villages where time seems to keep a different rhythm.

The experience extends across the Douro River aboard the property’s boat, available for private tours or as a privileged way to explore the region from the river, reviving one of the oldest ways to travel through this valley.

At Casa do Ferrão, each stay aims to be unique.

There’s no rush.

There is time.

Time to appreciate the sunrise over the vineyards. Time to read in the shade of a centuries-old olive tree. Time to share a table where local flavors tell stories of generations. Time to contemplate the silence of one of the most extraordinary cultural landscapes in the world.

Because the Douro region is more than just wine.

It is heritage, memory, architecture, culture, nature, and emotion.

Casa do Ferrão was born precisely from this encounter between the past and the future.

It’s not just about receiving guests.

It aims to welcome people who are looking for authentic experiences.

Because some places are meant to be visited.

Others become part of our memory.

Casa do Ferrão humbly aspires to be one of those places.
